I realized I never updated my web-site with the results. www.theNFLguy.com

There were 43 official entrants. Three people picked the exact total points and Saints to win. Congrats to @morgan_nola for winning theNFLguy Super Bowl contest and the Saints shirt. Morgan was the first to send his pick and won the tiebreaker. @MrRobbieo came in 2nd place and won a 2001 Super Bowl jacket. @Exotika came in third place but did not claim her prize.

I plan some more contests in the near future, so stay tuned!

theNFLguy Super Bowl Competition. Well the Vikings didn’t win, but it wasn’t the fault of Brett Favre. The blame mostly falls on the defense and on a late fumble by Adrian Peterson which set up the Bears' winning score in overtime. For a recap, see my Projections vs. Reality!

Projections vs. Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 21, Bears 17
Outcome: Vikings 30, Bears 36

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 125 combined yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 137 combined yards, 2 TDs and 1 fumble

Brett Favre: My projection: 180 yards, 1TD
Outcome: 321 passing yards, 2 TDs and 1 fumble

Sidney Rice: Projection : 50Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 56 yards and 1 TD

Percy Harvin: My projection: 40 yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 40 yards

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 30 yards
Outcome: 58 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 25 yards
Outcome: 40 yards and 1 TD

Chester Taylor: My projection: 25 combined yards
Outcome: 55 combined yards

THIS WEEK

The Vikings are one of the few playoff teams that have a lot to play for this week. The playoff seeds are far from set. The Vikings could end up anywhere between the number two through number four seeds, depending on what happens with the Eagles-Cowboys and Cardinals-Packers games. Also, after losing three of the last four games, I predict the Vikings to come out strong this week and win 34-24 against the New York Giants .

RUMORS

No Rumors.

INJURIES

Visanthe Shiancoe is the only Vikings’ player of fantasy relevance to appear on the injury report this week. He is listed as questionable with a thigh injury. He returned to practice in a very limited role on Thursday.

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
After a tough road stretch, Brett Favre is back playing at home this week. Weather is not a concern when you’re playing at the Metrodome. The Giants do not give up a lot of yards through the air as they’re ranked eighth in pass defense. However, they’ve given up 27 touchdowns through the air; only four teams have given up more passing touchdowns this year.

My Projection: 250 yards, 2 TDs.

RUNNING BACKS
The Giants rank 15th against the rush, however they’ve given up 20 rushing touchdowns this year. Only the Raiders and Rams have been worse than the Giants in this category. Expect a big day from “All Day”.

My Projection: Peterson 120 combined yards, 2 TDs

WIDE RECEIVERS
Sidney Rice and Percy Harvin are legitimate number one and number two fantasy receivers respectively. Playing at home, I expect big games from both receivers this week.

My Projection: Rice 80 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 60 combined yards, 1 TD

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe is questionable this week. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a little rest with the playoffs looming the following week.

My Projection: 25 yards

KICKER
Start Ryan Longwell.

DEFENSE
The Viking defense has looked sick. The Giants have potential to score a lot of points. The Vikings have holes in both their offensive line and their secondary. Adrian Peterson only rushed for 35 yards against one of the worst rushing defenses in the league. Brett Favre was sacked four times and pressured throughout the game. The offensive line was supposed to be one of the strong suits for the Vikings, but after two bad losses to the Panthers and Cardinals, it now looks like a glaring weakness. On top everything, there appears to be a developing schism between the head coach and the quarterback. I will address this latest controversy in my Rumors section. For a recap of the numbers, check out Projections versus Reality.

Projections vs. Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 27, Panthers 10
Outcome: Vikings 7, Panthers 26

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 165 combined yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 108 combined yards and 1 TD

Brett Favre: My projection: 220 yards, 2TDs and 1 INT
Outcome: 224 yards passing and 1 INT

Sidney Rice: Projection : 100 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 69 yards

Percy Harvin: My projection: Will not play
Outcome: 10 yards

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 40 yards
Outcome: 25 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 55 yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 24 yards

Chester Taylor: My projection: 45 combined yards
Outcome: 13 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Top 5 fantasy defense
Outcome: Number 14 fantasy defense

THIS WEEK

The Vikings travel to Chicago for Monday Night Football. On paper the 5-9 Bears should be just the right medicine to cure the Vikings’ ills. Not many teams have looked worse as of late, with the Bears dropping eight of their last ten games. However, this is a rivalry game, on the road, and in the freezing cold. I saw a statistic on ESPN that Brett Favre lost his last seven games on the road whenever the temperature was below 37 degrees. Not only did he lose, but his stats were dreadful in those games. Next Monday Night the temperature is expected to be below 30 degrees at Soldier Field. One positive aspect for fantasy owners is that this game matters to the Vikings. They only have a half game lead over the Eagles for the number two seed in the playoffs, so they should be playing hard and I don’t expect any starters to rest. That being said, the weather conditions are not ideal. I predict a low scoring affair. I predict the Vikings to win a close one 21-17 over the Bears.

RUMORS

It’s not the first time this year that the Vikings are at the center of a soap opera. Brett Favre and Brad Childress are supposedly in a power struggle over who has control of the offense. Apparently, Favre has been audibling out of running plays for Adrian Peterson more than Childress would like. Things bubbled over last week against Carolina when Childress tried to bench Favre when the Vikings were leading 7-6 in the 3rd quarter.

I don’t have insight into how often Favre has changed plays at the line of scrimmage. I do know that Brad Childress was wrong to suggest benching Favre against Carolina. The Vikings needed to win in order to maintain a one and a half game lead over Philadelphia for the number two seed in the playoffs. In Childress’ mind, he wanted to protect Favre from injury so that Favre would be healthy for the playoffs. However, what kind of message does that send to the team?

Brett Favre was right to tell his head coach that he was staying in the game. The Vikings playoff seeding was at stake. Childress goes on to defend his idea as “stream of consciousness” that occurs during the course of a game. I describe it as opening his mouth without thinking. However, when it comes to talking without considering the consequences, Brett Favre is a trail blazer. Favre should know better than to reveal this discussion to the media. However, this is the essence of Favre being Favre. Personally, I think this is overblown. I agree with Childress when he says that these types of conversations happen all the time between players and coaches. People have disagreements and arguments and move on. It just so happens that this “heated discussion” took place on national television during Sunday Night Football. The fact that the Vikings lost only amplifies the situation. This kind of story has staying power. It doesn’t disappear after 24 hours; it only grows. Moreover, if the Vikings lose this week in Chicago, the talking heads will attribute this schism as the reason for the loss. If Favre and Childress truly want to put this controversy behind them, they need only to heed the advice of one Al Davis who famously said “Just win baby”.

INJURIES

Percy Harvin is the only significant fantasy player on the injury report this week. He is listed as probable with a neck injury, not migraine headaches. He practiced at full speed on Wednesday.

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK

I do not think this is a good week to start Brett Favre. The weather conditions will not be favorable for the passing game. Additionally, with the controversy this week regarding Favre audibling out of running plays, I think that the Vikings will focus primarily on the run this week.

My Projection: 180 yards, 1 TD

RUNNING BACKS
Adrian Peterson struggled again last week. He rushed for only 35 yards on 12 carries. He did however catch three balls for 73 yards. With all the controversy about Favre changing running plays to passing plays at the line of scrimmage, I fully expect the Vikings to make the running game work on Monday night against the Bears. Furthermore, with weather conditions likely to hinder the passing game I expect All Day to run all night.

My Projection: Peterson 125 combined yards, 1 TD; Taylor 25 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
Sidney Rice is a must start in most fantasy formats. Percy Harvin is a little bit of question mark. He missed the game two weeks ago because of migraine headaches. He returned last week after missing two weeks of practice, and had only one catch for ten yards. He is practicing at full speed this week, so I expect him to be more involved against the Bears.

My Projection: Rice 50 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 40 combined yards, 1TD; Berrian 30 yards

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe has disappointed the last two weeks. He only had three catches for 24 yards against the Panthers. He always has a good chance to score a touchdown but it’s tough to predict.

My Projection: 25 yards

KICKER
Ryan Longwell usually is a must start. However, I do not expect a lot of offense this week. Additionally, the expected bad weather conditions will hurt the kicking game.

My advice: Sit him.

DEFENSE
The Vikings defense has been a disappointment for a few weeks now. However, the Bears are abysmal on offense and Jay Cutler turns the ball over like Jay Schroeder.

My Projection: Vikings will be a top 10 fantasy defense.

CONTACT theNFLguy:

Follow me on Twitter @theNFLguy

Email theNFLguy@gmail.com

Visit www.theNFLguy.com

Become a Fan on Facebook

theNFL guy makes Week 16 Picks

theNFLguy went 10-6 last week, including 1-1 on upset picks. There is nothing new in Vikings’ Land; however the Washington Redskins have finally replaced the much beleaguered general manager, Vinny Cerrato. They hired Bruce Allen who previously served as a senior personnel executive with the Oakland Raiders and former general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bruce worked Jon Gruden at both organizations so many people are speculating that Bruce will hire Gruden to be the next head coach of the Washington Redskins. The Monday Night Football game this week should be very interesting as Gruden comes to Washington to announce the game. This will be an interesting story to follow over the next few weeks.

INJURIES
Percy Harvin missed last week’s game due to migraine headaches. He has not yet practiced this week so I’m not optimistic about him playing. Visanthe Shiancoe was limited in practice yesterday with a rib injury and Bernard Berrian was limited with a hamstring injury. However, both are expected to play on Sunday Night. Be sure to follow me on Twitter for injury updates @theNFLguy

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
Brett Favre has come down to earth the last two games after playing some of the best football of his career. He still looks good, but not phenomenal, after throwing three interceptions in his last two games. The Panthers have some players on defense and could pose some problems. They rank 6th in pass defense; allowing less than 200 yards per game. They’ve intercepted 18 passes and only allowed 13 passing touchdowns. I expect only modest numbers from Brett Favre this week.

My Projection: 220 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT

RUNNING BACKS
After the worst game of his season, Adrian Peterson returned last week and delivered the type of dominant performance that fantasy football owners expect. Most impressively he did it against one of the best run defenses in the NFL. This week Peterson faces a Carolina team that struggles against the run. Carolina ranks 26th in run defense giving up almost 140 yards per game. Adrian is also catching a lot of balls out of the backfield to, so I expect a huge game as measured by combined rushing/receiving yards.

My Projection: Peterson 165 combined yards, 1 TD; Taylor 45 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
Sidney Rice is a good receiver and his value only increases with Percy Harvin out of the lineup. No one knows if Percy will play this week. He missed last week’s game against the Bengals and has not practiced in almost two weeks due to migraine headaches. If you’re a Percy Harvin owner, I would look for other options this week. Bernard Berrian should see a little more action with Percy out of the lineup, but he’s still bothered by a hamstring injury which has limited his production all season.

My Projection: Rice 100 yards, 1 TD; Berrian 40 yards

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe has been one of the top tight ends this year. But not last week when he caught only two balls for 19 yards. However, now that Percy Harvin is in question and Berrian limited, who’s left to catch balls? I predict that Shiancoe produces this week.

My Projection: 55 yards and 1TD

KICKER
If you have Ryan Longwell, you should start him every week. The Vikings score a lot, and he’s very good. He’s also just a kicker, so there’s not much else to say here.

DEFENSE
The Vikings are good on defense. The Panthers are bad on offense. The Panthers’ young quarterback is starting only his third game in the NFL. Can the math be any simpler? Start the Vikings. I predict the Vikings to finish as a top five fantasy defense against the Panthers.

theNFLguy Makes Week 15 Picks

theNFLguy went 10-6 last week, including 2-1 on upset picks. On one side, there was 40 year old, three-time NFL MVP, and two-time super bowl participant Brett Favre. On the other side, there was 38 year old, two-time NFL MVP, and three-time super bowl participant Kurt Warner. When two, future hall of fame quarterbacks known for their gunslinger mentality face off, you expect a real shootout. Kurt Warner came out, guns blazing, firing away with uncanny accuracy hitting 22 of 32 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns. The other gunslinger, Brett Favre shot himself in the foot. He threw two interceptions in the game after only throwing three during the first 11 games of the season. But it wasn’t all Favre’s fault. There was plenty of blame to go around. Head coach Brad Childress explained "It was pretty clear to me from where I stood that we got outplayed, we got out-tempoed.” I agree with the outplayed sentiment, but I don’t think being out-tempoed was the key to this loss. This game was lost in the trenches. The Arizona Cardinals were the more physical team, and they beat down the Vikings on both sides of the ball. On offense, they did not allow a sack against a Vikings front four that is considered one of the best in the game. The Cardinal’s offensive line gave Kurt Warner time to pick apart the Vikings defense with surgeon-like accuracy. On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals front seven completely overwhelmed the Vikings offensive line. Favre was sacked three times and was under constant pressure. Additionally, former number one running back in the entire NFL (Chris Johnson now holds this title), Adrian Peterson was held to an amazingly low 19 yards on 13 carries. The Cardinals knocked down the Vikings time after time, and the Vikings could not pick themselves up and mount an effective response. Do not get fooled by the “it’s only one game” mentality. This game was important. The Vikings were only one game behind the Saints, and were playing for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Now they must hold off a resurgent Cardinals team to remain the number two seed for the playoffs. Also, this game had a much different feel than the Vikings’ loss at Pittsburgh. If not for some fluke plays, the Vikings could have beaten the Steelers. There were no flukes against Arizona. The Cardinals were the better team by a wide margin.

Now onto Projections vs. Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 34, Cardinals 27
Outcome: Vikings 17, Cardinals 30

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 90 combined yards, 1 TD
Outcome: 65 combined yards

Brett Favre: My projection: 300 yards and 3 TDs
Outcome: 275 yards passing and 2 TDs, 2 INTs

Sidney Rice: Projection : 110 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 72 yards

Percy Harvin: My projection: 80 combined yards and 1TD
Outcome: 101 combined yards and 1 TD

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 50 yards
Outcome: 36 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 45 yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 14 yards and 1 TD

Chester Taylor: My projection: 55 combined yards
Outcome: 49 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Top 10 fantasy defense
Outcome: Number 30 Fantasy Defense for week 13

THIS WEEK
This week the Vikings face another stiff test. The Cincinnati Bengals have a better front seven than the Arizona Cardinals. The Bengals have the fourth best overall defense in the NFL. The Bengals are designed to both run the ball and stop the run. If the Vikings play like they did last week against Arizona then they’re in trouble. I know the Bengals are going to be ready for the war in the trenches. I hope that the Vikings can match the intensity and physicality of the Bengals on both sides of the ball. I give the Vikings the advantage because this game is at home, but it should be a very close one. I predict Vikings win 24-20.

RUMORS
No rumors to report this week, so I’ll offer some waiver wire advice. Jerome Harrison was a hot name on the waiver wire late last week, and after his performance against San Diego his stock is even higher. He only had 10 carries for 35 yards, but more impressively he caught seven balls for 62 yards and two touchdowns. He has a bad matchup against the Steelers this week, but weeks 15 and 16 he faces two of the worst rush defenses in the league – Oakland and Kansas City. You’ll also want to pick up his backup, Chris Jennings, as a handcuff.

INJURIES
I’m writing this on Tuesday so there are no formal updates on injuries. Visanthe Shiancoe was questionable before the Arizona game. He started and scored a touchdown. Adrian Peterson was listed as probable. He played, but did not look good. However, besides Shiancoe and Percy Harvin, no one really looked good against the Cardinals. Favre appeared to hurt his throwing hand during the game. I don’t know if it was serious enough to get listed on the injury report. We’ll just have to wait and see later in the week. For injury updates during the week and before the game, follow me on Twitter @theNFLguy

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
Favre is still in the running for the MVP of the NFL. He had a little hiccup against the Cardinals, but his numbers were still decent from a fantasy perspective – 274 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He faces a stiff test against a very strong Bengals defense. I think the Bengals will be able to stop the Vikings running game. So Favre will have to air it out to win. The Bengals have a stiff pass defense ranked 13th in the league. They’ve only allowed 13 passing touchdowns over twelve games while prodicing 14 interceptions and 29 sacks. There may be better options than Favre this week, but I think he still has a very good week.

My Projection: 240 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS
Percy Harvin was the best running back for the Vikings last week and he’s considered a wide receiver. However, he did play a lot of running back at the University of Florida. Harvin rushed for 22 yards on 2 carries last week. In comparison, Adrian Peterson only rushed for 19 yards on 13 carries and Chester Taylor rushed for 21 yards on five carries. I still firmly believe that Harvin should get more snaps at running back and at quarterback in the wildcat formation. I think he should get him an additional five to ten touches per game this way.

Adrian Peterson was clocked by police driving 109 miles per hour last week. He did not look that fast on Sunday night, when he rushed for only 19 yards against the Cardinals. He’s struggled the past three weeks with injuries and fumbles. This week is not his best opportunity to get back on track, when the Vikings face the number two rush defense in the NFL. While I am not recommending to bench Peterson, my projections for him are not very good this week.

My Projection: Peterson 70 combined yards; Taylor 30 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
Every time I make a declaration about the Vikings receivers they prove me wrong the following week. In my league, Percy Harvin is the top fantasy wide receiver on the Vikings. We don’t count points per reception. On the season he has caught 48 passes for 681 yards and six touchdowns. He has 13 rushes for 113 yards, and he has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Sidney Rice has caught 63 balls for 1,036 yards and four touchdowns. Percy Harvin ranks as the eleventh best fantasy receiver with 130.2 points and Sidney Rice comes in a close second ranking 15th with 127.6 points. Of course if you count receptions, then Rice comes out on top. These guys can be considered low end number one, or high end number two receivers any given week. The only thing hurting their production is tight end Visanthe Shiancoe. I’ll get to him in the next section. This is a tough week, but I think Favre will have to win this game through the air.

My Projection: Rice 80 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 80 combined yards and 1 TD; Berrian 30 yards

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe only caught two balls for 14 yards against the Cardinals, but he made it count hauling in another touchdown. He now has nine on the season. If you need to start a tight end, it’s tough to leave him on the bench.

My Projection: 30 yards and 1TD

KICKER
If you have Ryan Longwell, you should start him every week. The Vikings score a lot, and he’s very good. He’s also just a kicker, so there’s not much else to say here.

DEFENSE
The Vikings defense looked horrible last week. This week’s matchup is tough, but should not be as bad as last week. Especially, since the Vikings are playing at home.

I don’t think this is the best matchup, but the Vikings should still finish as a top twelve defense against the Bengals.

It’s playoff time for fantasy football. Would you believe me? Well, he is. That is, if you start the season at week three instead of week one. Remember, Favre missed all of training camp and came to the Vikings after the first preseason game. He was still getting in shape and developing rapport with his receivers the first two weeks of the season.

In my league*, the top five quarterbacks are Rogers (255 points), Brees (228 points), Manning (217 points), Brady (210 points) and Favre (205 points). However, when you take out the first two weeks of the season, Favre moves to the number two spot: Rogers (222 points), Favre (183 points), Brady (182 points), Manning (179 points) and Brees (168 points). Most preseason fantasy football analysts ranked Favre around twenty, in other words, a low-end number two quarterback. I had him ranked 12, but with upside if he could stay healthy. However, I don’t think Brett Favre, Brad Childress, or anyone for that matter could have predicted this - that Brett would be an MVP candidate at age 40, and producing at the level of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

Brett Favre had another MVP performance against the Chicago Bears last week. He spread the ball around with five different receivers, catching five passes or more during the game. One of the announcers said that this was the first time in Vikings’ history that a quarterback had achieved this statistic. Just one more record to add to the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history. Favre also passed for a season high of 392 yards. Oh how I wish I could go back in time to my fantasy football draft this year and take Brett Favre in round eight. And even that was considered too high at the time. My preseason predictions for Favre were not all that bad when compared to the general consensus. My player predictions for last week were even better.

Now onto Projections vs. Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 34, Bears 20
Outcome: Vikings 36, Bears 10

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 140 combined yards, 1 TD
Outcome: 103 combined yards and 1 TD

Brett Favre: My projection: 230 yards and 3 TDs
Outcome: 392 yards passing and 3 TDs

Sidney Rice: Projection : 90 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 89 yards

Percy Harvin: My projection: 60 combined yards combined yards and 1TD
Outcome: 146 combined yards and 1 TD

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 30 yards
Outcome: 74 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 40 yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 51 yards and 1 TD

Chester Taylor: My projection: 40 combined yards
Outcome: 84 combined yards and 1 TD

Vikings Defense: My projection: Top 5 fantasy defense
Outcome: Number 10 Fantasy Defense for week 12

THIS WEEK
This week the Vikings finally have a challenging matchup after three easy ones. They are traveling to Arizona to face the Cardinals. The big question this week is who will start at quarterback for Arizona. Kurt Warner missed last week’s game against the Tennessee Titans. He was still suffering some lingering effects from a concussion he had received the week before. Matt Leinart filled in admirably, but the Cardinals are not as dangerous with Warner out of the lineup. I think the Vikings will win this game either way, but if Warner plays the Cardinals have a shot. My prediction is based on Warner being in the lineup. I predict the Vikings to win 34-27.

RUMORS
No rumors to report this week, so I’ll offer my waiver wire pickup of the week to fill this space. The landscape is barren for running backs at this point in the season. All of the good ones should be on rosters, so where do you go if you’re desperate? Jerrious Norwood of the Falcons. He is available in most leagues after missing five games with injury. Even before his injury he didn’t do much because Michael Turner was getting the bulk of the carries. Two weeks ago, owners rushed to pick up Jason Snelling because Michael Turner got injured and Jerrious Norwood was still inactive. Last week, both Turner and Norwood returned. Unfortunately, Turner got injured again. Turner had 12 carries before his injury. Norwood had six carries for 22 yards – three more carries than Jason Snelling. Norwood also caught two passes for 22 yards and a touchdown. Norwood is the fastest of the three running backs, and if Turner is out, then Norwood should be the featured back ahead of Snelling. However, when Turner comes back healthy, expect Norwood to drift back to fantasy football irrelevancy.

INJURIES
Adrian Peterson was questionable before last week’s game with an ankle injury and illness. Subsequently, he did not have a great outing with only 85 yards rushing and two fumbles. However, he still managed to get a late touchdown. Bernard Berrian was also listed as questionable with a hamstring injury that has been bothering him all season. Berrian played well catching six passes for 74 yards. As I’m writing this on Tuesday, the injury reports are not yet out so I don’t have any informed updates. I expect both of these guys will probably play this week, but to be sure, follow me on Twitter for injury updates @theNFLguy

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
At the top of my article I stated that Favre is the number two fantasy quarterback starting at week three of the NFL season, trailing only Aaron Rogers. That does not mean that you should automatically start Favre over Brady, Manning or Brees as they’re are all only separated by a few points. What it does mean, is that you should look at the matchups when making your lineup decisions. Favre is the number five fantasy quarterback for the entire season, and he can start over most other quarterbacks in any given week. Feel free to send me your start/sit questions via Twitter or email.

This week the Vikings face a challenging defense in the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals rank 4th in sacks and 11th in interceptions in the league. However, they rank 29th in pass defense by total yards. Expect a shootout, especially if Warner plays.

My Projection: 300 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS
Adrian Peterson has some injuries and an illness, and I’m not talking about his recent case of fumble-litis. He’ll face a stiffer test than previous weeks going against the Cardinal 14th ranked rush defense. They are giving up only 108 yards per game. They’ve also only given up eight touchdowns on the ground this year, which comes out to less than one per game. I expect Chester Taylor to get a little more involved after his great performance last week.

My Projection: Peterson 90 combined yards, 1 TD; Taylor 55 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
Percy Harvin was the best receiver last week. He has all but wrapped up the rookie of the year award. He had six catches for 101 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. He also added 45 yards on two carries. I think the Vikings should line him up more often at running back. That formation paid off last week against the Bears, and it was a big factor in the Florida Gators winning the national championship last year. Sidney Rice is still Brett Favre’s favorite target, but Percy is a close second. Coming in third was the consensus preseason number one receiver, Bernard Berrian. It’s surprising how far Berrian is behind Harvin and Rice in production. Part of the problem is a hamstring injury that has been affecting him all year. The other problem is that there are not enough balls to go around. When you also factor in Visanthe Shiancoe, Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson, someone has to lose out. That someone is Bernard Berrian.

My Projection: Rice 110 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 80 combined yards and 1 TD; Berrian 50 yards

TIGHT ENDS
Shiancoe is now racking up yards to go along with his touchdowns. He has back to back games with over 50 yards receiving (78 and 51), and he has touchdowns in both of those games. He also has the most touchdowns of any tight end in the league with eight in eleven games. Very impressive!

My Projection: 45 yards and 1TD

KICKER
If you have Ryan Longwell, you should start him every week. The Vikings score a lot, and he’s very good. He’s also a kicker, so there’s not much else to say here.

DEFENSE
The Vikings are the third ranked fantasy defense in my league. However, if Warner starts it could be a shootout and you may want to look elsewhere for a defense. On the other hand, if Leinart starts, then this could be a great matchup. Either way, I predict the Vikings to finish as a top 10 fantasy defense against the Cardinals.

* Favre is the number two fantasy quarterback in my league if the season started at week 3. The scoring for quarterbacks in my league is as follows: 4 points for passing touchdowns, 1 point for 25 yards passing (0.04 points for 1 yard passing), 2 points for interception, 0.1 points for 1 yard rushing, 2 bonus points for touchdown passes over 40 yards.

Week 12: Bears at Vikings Fantasy Football Preview

LAST WEEK

I was in New Orleans for my sister’s wedding this past weekend. For the big finale at the end of the night, a Jazz band played “When the Saints Go Marching In”. The band marched through the multi-room reception area and a train of people followed behind them. Then the familiar “Who Dat” chant broke out. “Who dat? Who dat? Who dat say they gonna beat dem Saints?”

I’ll tell you who. These Minnesota Vikings. As much as I love the Saints, the Minnesota Vikings are the most complete team in the NFL. They showed it again this week. The Vikings had so thoroughly dominated the game against the Seahawks that after three quarters they were up by four scores. After throwing four touchdowns, Favre was replaced by Tavaris Jackson with under a minute left in the third quarter. Just think what kind of stats Favre would have put if he had played another quarter! The Vikings are doing a great job keeping Favre fresh and getting him out of games early when they have a big lead. This strategy should pay off down the final stretch of the season. It does not appear that Favre will breakdown physically as he did at the end of last year with the Jets.

I predict the Vikings will beat the Saints in the NFC Championship game, but that’s still a couple months away. For a summary of my more recent predictions, check out Projections vs. Reality below.

The Game: My projection: Vikings 31, Seahawks 17

Outcome: Vikings 35, Seahawks 9

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 130 combined yards, 1 TD

Outcome: 98 combined yards

Brett Favre: My projection: 270 yards, 2 TDs

Outcome: 213 yards, 4 TDs

Sidney Rice: Projection : 100 Yards, 1 TD

Outcome: 89 yards, 2 TDs

Percy Harvin: My projection: 60 combined yards, 1TD

Outcome: 79 yards, 1TD

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 40 yards

Outcome: 11 yards, 1TD

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 30 yards, 1 TD

Outcome: 78 yards, 1TD

Chester Taylor: My projection: 25 combined yards

Outcome: 85 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Top 10 fantasy defense

Outcome: Number 7 fantasy defense

THIS WEEK

This week is a rivalry game. The 4-6 Bears come to Minnesota. The Bears are losers of five of their last six games. However, I don’t think they are as bad as their recent record. They have the 13th ranked defense in the NFL, and the 19th ranked offense. Jay Cutler is the main cause of this losing streak. He’s throwing a lot of interceptions, many of which are taking place in the red zone. A sure recipe for disaster! I predict the Vikings win 34-20.

RUMORS

No rumors to report this week.

INJURIES

Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Bernard Berrian are listed as probable this week. All are expected to play, but if you have any uncertainty, then follow me on Twitter for injury updates before kickoff.

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK

Favre is a top seven quarterback this week. He faces the eighth ranked pass defense of the Bears. The Bears are giving up approximately 200 yards per game through the air. They are averaging one interception and two sacks per game - solid numbers but nothing spectacular. Favre has been playing lights out, and I see no reason why that shouldn’t continue.

My Projection: 230 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS

The Bears have the 23rd rushing defense in the NFL. They’re giving up over 120 yards per game on the ground and almost one rushing touchdown per game. Adrian Peterson is a must start every week no matter who the Vikings play.

My Projection: Peterson 140 combined yards, 1 TD; Taylor 40 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS

Sidney Rice is a top twelve receiver. Percy Harvin should be ranked somewhere between 20 and 30, and Bernard Berrian should be ranked in the range of 30 to 40. For specific start/sit questions, send me your questions via Twitter or email.

My Projection: Rice 90 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 60 combined yards and 1 TD; Berrian 30 yards

TIGHT ENDS

Visanthe Shiancoe is tied with Vernon Davis for most touchdowns by a tight end with seven. He also had his best output in yards last week. He is a top ten tight end.

My Projection: 40 yards and 1TD

KICKER

Ryan Longwell is the number five fantasy kicker. This week he has a great matchup and is kicking at home in the dome. Start him.

DEFENSE

Cutler has been throwing a lot of picks, and he has not faced a front four like the Vikings. This means good things for owners of the Vikings Defense. They should finish in the top five this year.

It’s that make or break time of the year when fantasy owners are jockeying for playoff positioning or struggling to get invited to the party. It appears that Ben Roethlisberger will sit out against the Ravens, and Bulger is out for the Rams. Steven Jackson is also listed as questionable for the Rams.

Updated Picks (Saturday 11/28):

Seattle to win at St. Louis
Baltimore to win at home vs. Pittsburgh

theNFLguy picks:

Green Bay to win at Detroit
Dallas to win at home vs. Oakland
NY Giants to win at Denver
Atlanta to win at home vs. Tampa Bay
Miami to win at Buffalo
Philadelphia to win at home vs. Washington
Cincinnati to win at home vs. Cleveland
Indianapolis to win at Houston
Minnesota to win at home vs. Chicago
San Diego to win at home vs. Kansas City
San Francisco to win at home vs. Jacksonville

theNFLguy picks three upsets this week:

Arizona to win at Tennessee
Carolina to win at NY Jets
New England to win at New Orleans

WEEK 11 Vikings vs. Seahawks - Fantasy Football Preview
LAST WEEK
Let’s imagine two teams are competing in a football game. One team is better at every single position on the field than the other team. However, the really good team is coming off a bye and appears to be a little rusty. Let’s imagine the good team has the best running back in the NFL but he fumbles twice in the red zone. Then they go on to commit 13 penalties for 91 yards. With everything going wrong, does the inferior team have a chance to pull out a victory? Not if they are facing the Vikings! In case you haven’t figured it out this was a partial recap of the Vikings and Lions matchup of week ten. The Vikings overcame all these obstacles to easily beat the Detroit Lions 27-10. The part of the story that I didn’t tell, was that Favre threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown, Sidney Rice had over 200 yards receiving, and Adrian Peterson rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns. So what would have happened if the Vikings had not started off so slow? They probably would have come a lot closer to scoring the 41 points that I predicted. I missed on that one, but see how I performed on my other predictions in Projections vs. Reality.

The Game: My projection: Vikings 41, Lions 20
Outcome: Vikings 27, Lions 10

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 140 combined yards, 2TDs
Outcome: 143 combined yards and 2TDs

Brett Favre: My projection: 230 yards and 3 TDs
Outcome: 344 yards passing, 1 TD

Sidney Rice: Projection : 90 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 201 yards

Percy Harvin: My projection: 60 combined yards combined yards and 1TD
Outcome: 60 combined yards

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 50 yards
Outcome: 22 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 20 yards and 1TD
Outcome: 43 yards

Chester Taylor: My projection: 60 combined yards
Outcome: 27 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Top 5 fantasy defense
Outcome: #12 Fantasy Defense for week ten

THIS WEEK
This week the Vikings have another easy matchup when they play the Seattle Seahawks at home in Minnesota. Seattle is a below average team with the 16th ranked defense and the 20th ranked offense in the league. This is another must start for the big three in Minnesota – Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and Sidney Rice. I predict the Vikings win 31-17.

RUMORS
No rumors to report this week, so I’ll revisit my Top Four Power Rankings.

1. Vikings
2. Colts
3. Saints
4. Bengals

A couple weeks ago I had the Saints in the top spot. Although they’re still undefeated their wins are becoming less and less impressive. They just don’t look like the best team in football. The Vikings do however. They are a complete team. The only potential weakness is in the secondary, but their front seven can help hide this weakness by putting tremendous pressure on opposing quarterbacks. I have the Colts moving up from number four to number two. Although I think the Patriots should have won last week’s game, the Colts prevailed. This was a quality win for the Colts and they have a great chance to go undefeated this year. The only really tough matchup left on the schedule is at Baltimore this week. The Steelers were the number three team previously, but after losing twice to the Bengals they have fallen off the list.

INJURIES
This supposed groin injury is the best thing that could have happened to Brett Favre. His stats have gone through the roof the past two weeks. For the superstitious folks out there, let’s hope this injury lingers on. The big injury news from outside of Minnesota is that Ronnie Brown has been place on IR and is done for the year. I traded Ryan Grant and Carson Palmer for him last week. Great move! No need to worry. A lot of talented guys are available on the waiver wire this week. Check out my article, <a href="http://www.thenflguy.com/2009/11/ranking-waiver-wire-running-backs.html"target="_blank">Ranking the Waiver Wire Running Backs, Playoff Positioning and Don’t Pick up That Guy!

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
Favre is a true number fantasy quarterback this year. Most pundits had him ranked around twenty in the draft. I thought he would finish the season around twelve or thirteen. He is currently ranked number nine in fantasy points. He’s ahead of Kurt Warner, Donovan McNabb, and Matt Ryan to name a few. I could see Favre climbing up to number five by the end of the regular season, only behind Brady, Manning, Brees, and Rogers. Brett has weapons at every position. He has the big wideout, the fast wideout, and the playmaking wideout. He has the touchdown-pass-catching tight end. He has a great third down back that can catch out of the backfield, a great offensive line, and the best running back in the league. He also has a favorable schedule with many porous defenses the rest of the way. He should do well against the Seahawks’ 22nd ranked pass-defense.

My Projection: 270 yards, 2 TDs

RUNNING BACKS
The Seahawks have the 11th ranked rush defense. They’re giving up 105 yards per game and eight rushing touchdowns over the first nine games. Adrian Peterson is a must start every week. However if you don’t have Adrian Peterson and you’re looking for help at running back, then check out my article, <a href="http://www.thenflguy.com/2009/11/ranking-waiver-wire-running-backs.html"target="_blank">Ranking the Waiver Wire Running Backs

My Projection: Peterson 130 combined yards, 1 TD; Taylor 25 combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
There have been questions for the first part of the season as to who would be the number one receiver for the Vikings. Berrian was number one last year. Percy Harvin took an early lead this year, but we now finally have a winner. Sidney Rice is the clear number one favorite target of Brett Favre. Rice caught seven balls for 201 yards last week. He’s now not only a number one receiver for the Vikings, but he’s a number one receiver for fantasy teams (meaning top twelve). Percy Harvin could explode any given week. He should be considered a number three receiver for fantasy leagues (meaning ranked between 25-36). Berrian is clearly a number four fantasy receiver, meaning that in most formats he should be remain on your bench.

My Projection: Rice 100 yards, 1 TD; Harvin 60 combined yards and 1 TD; Berrian 40 yards

TIGHT ENDS
It’s feast of famine with Shiancoe. He’s the perfect player for scoring only leagues as he has six touchdowns on the season. However, if you want yards, he doesn’t get them. It’s really a guess each week if he will score a touchdown or not. Your odds are slightly better than 50%. He didn’t have a touchdown last week, so I’ll project he’ll get on this week. For flex situations, I would select the top 40 wide receivers ahead of Shiancoe in any given week.

My Projection: 30 yards and 1TD

KICKER
If you have Ryan Longwell, you should start him every week. The

Vikings score a lot, and he’s very good. He’s also a kicker, so

there’s not much else to say here.

DEFENSE
In my league, the Vikings are the sixth ranked fantasy defense. This is a good matchup at home against a below average offense I predict they will be a top ten fantasy defense against the Seahawks.

Week 10 was a tough week for fantasy owners after a slew of key injuries. Brian Westbrook, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson, Michael Turner, Julius Jones were some of the players that were knocked out of games. But if you own these guys, don’t worry. theNFLguy is here to help. A flurry of injuries has caused a number of new names to emerge as potential waiver wire pickups. There are some tough decisions to make. Who can best improve your team? This article aims to help you make those decisions by ranking the waiver wire running backs. I look at a number of factors: Explosive potential, seriousness of the starter’s injury and strength of schedule for the fantasy playoffs. This last category is not something many fantasy owners are usually investigating at this point in the season. So what constitutes fantasy playoffs? Some leagues start as early as Week 14 and some go all the way to Week 17. However, Weeks 15 and 16 seem to be included in most leagues, so I’ll focus there. I’ll look at the matchup for these running backs in those all important weeks, and assess the run defense that they’ll be competing against. Now let’s get to business.

Ranking the Waiver Wire

1. Jamaal Charles – He should have been picked up in most leagues prior to this week, but he’s only owned in 58% of CBSSports.com leagues. He is the clear number one running back in Kansas City with the departure of Larry Johnson. Jamaal ran for 103 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and caught four balls for 14 yards last Sunday versus the Raiders. He has a great matchup for the playoffs in Week 15 against the Browns 30th ranked rush defense. There are better options at running back in Week 16, when Charles faces the Bengals’ and their number two rushing defense.

2. Justin Forsett – I rank Justin Forsett of the Seahwaks as the best of running back this week that was forced into action because of injury to the starter. Of all the running backs that were injured this week, Julius Jones was the only one that did not have a firm hold on the starting position. He has had some shaky performances this year. With Justin Forsett’s strong performance against a good Cardinal run defense, he now has a shot to take over the starting role even when Jones returns to full health. As for the playoffs, he has a great matchup in Week 15 when he squares off against the 31st ranked Tampa Bay rush defense. Week 16 is a tougher matchup when he goes against the 4th ranked Packers

3. Ladell Betts - Many owners picked up Ladell Betts last week. He is 69% owned in CBSSports.com leagues. I was not one of them. The Redskins have been a mess all year, and I knew Betts would split carries with Rock Cartwright, so my expectations were low. Betts shattered my expectations with 26 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. Rock Cartwright also added 9 carries for 41 yards. This was the best the entire Redskins offense has looked all year. Maybe the Sherm Lewis play calling experiment is beginning to pay off. Betts should start again this week as Clinton Portis is still experiencing some lingering effects of the concussion. When Portis does return, Betts will move back to second string. However, after this week’s outcome, he will still probably see more touches per game than he did in the first half of the season.

4. Jason Snelling – Michael Turner has a high ankle sprain. These types of injuries can sometimes last a while, so Snelling could see extensive duty. He is not as explosive as Michael Turner, or Jerrious Norwood for that matter. It took Snelling 18 carries to reach 61 yards, however he did have a touchdown. Michael Turner had 111 yards on nine carries before he was injured. However, with both Turner and Norwood injured, expect Snelling to be the workhorse. As this injury may be serious, Snelling could be starting for a number of weeks. His playoff matchups are pretty good as well. He faces the Jets in Week 15 who have slipped to the number 18 rushing defense. And in Week 16, he faces the worst rush defense in the NFL - the 32nd ranked Buffalo Bills.

5. Bernard Scott – Cedric Benson has been a beast this year, and he is running behind a great line. Most of the news is that Benson will be back this week, so I don’t expect Scott to have as much impact as the above running backs. Scott is explosive though, at least in the area of kickoffs. He had a 96 yard return for a touchdown, which proved to be the difference in the game. On offense his numbers were not as impressive, but he was facing the number one rush defense in the NFL - the Pittsburgh Steelers. Scott finished with 13 carries for 33 yards and one catch for 21 yards. If Benson somehow is hurt during Weeks 15 and 16, then Scott has great matchups for the playoffs. Week 15, he faces the 23rd ranked Chargers and in Week 16 he faces the 27th ranked Kansas City Chiefs.

6. Jerrious Norwood – Talk about explosive! This guy should be at the top of the list. He averaged over 6 yards per carry in 2006 and 2007. Many people thought he would become the starter for the Falcons in 2008, but they brought in Michael Turner, and who can blame them. Unfortunately, this year has been rough. He has missed the past four weeks with injury. There are some rumors that he may be able to come back this week, but nothing is confirmed. Norwood has missed a lot of time. If you have room on your bench, why not stash him there and wait and see what happens.

Don’t Pick Up That Guy!

Larry Johnson – Many people will be tempted by this one, now that he is going to Cincinatti. In my opinion, Larry Johnson is only going there for additional depth. He’ll be learning a new offense and I don’t expect him to unseat Bernard Scott even for the number two position behind Cedric Benson. I would follow the lead of 32 general managers in the NFL, who let this guy clear waivers and remain on the street. You know there is something wrong when the Kansas City Chiefs fans started a petition to cut or deactivate Larry Johnson, because they didn’t want him to become the Chiefs all time leading running back. He was only 75 yards away from that honor. I’ll be surprised if he picks up 75 total yards over the next 4 weeks of the season.

Michael Bush – Bush had a heck of a game. He gained 119 yards on 14 rushes. But there are two very big problems here. First, he plays for the Oakland Raiders, the 2nd worst offense in the league. They rank 31st in the league by total yards. Even worse, Bush is part of a three headed running attack. Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden are the two primary backs. McFadden has been hurt, but he’s expected to return this week. Bush is no doubt better than Larry Johnson, and it’s possible he’ll outperform some other guys that I’ve recommended picking up. But barring new injuries to McFadden or Fargas, I believe Bush has the least upside potential of the other waiver wire running backs I’ve recommended this week.

Number Two Running Backs Who have Stud Potential

1. Ricky Williams – What am I saying? Ricky was already a stud, even before the injury of Ronnie Brown. This week the Dolphins have an early Thursday game. It’s unlikely that Brown will be available to play. If that’s the case, expect Ricky to be a legitimate number one running back this week. He was already a borderline number one fantasy running back. I rank him as a top ten back while Ronnie Brown is injured.
2. LeSean McCoy could be the number one running back for the rest of the year for the Eagles. Brian Westbrook had his second concussion in just four weeks. This is serious and he may be done for the season. Why do I have McCoy behind Ricky Williams? First the Eagles like to throw more than pass. And secondly, Philly has a tough fantasy playoff schedule, playing San Francisco (3rd rush defense) and Denver (12th rush defense) in Weeks 15 and 16.

Please feel free to send me questions and comments to theNFLguy@gmail.com
Follow me on Twitter for injury updates and discussion @theNFLguy

theNFLguy makes Week 10 Picks

theNFLguy picked 8 out of 13 games correctly last week, including his upset pick. LIONS
LAST WEEK

Last week was a bye for the Vikings and boy did they deserve it.

One week earlier, they appeared in one of the most anticipated

regular season games in recent NFL history. Brett Favre returned

to Green Bay where he played for 16 years, but this time he was

wearing the uniform of the Packers’ arch rival, the Minnesota

Vikings. Everyone wondered how Favre would respond in such an

emotional and hostile environment. Brett did not disappoint. He

played perfectly. And by perfectly, I mean he threw four

touchdowns and no interceptions. He is playing as good as ever

and has now become a legitimate number one option for fantasy

quarterbacks.

The more important question though is … how did I perform in this

all important match up? Take a look below in a piece I like to

call Projections versus Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 34, Packers 31
Outcome: Vikings 38, Packers 26

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 100 yards rushing, 40 yards receiving and 1TD.
Outcome: 97 yards rushing, 44 yards receiving and 1TD.

Brett Favre: My projection: 300 yards and 3 TDs.
Outcome: 244 yards passing, 4 TDs.

Percy Harvin: My projection: 75 combined yards and 1TD
Outcome: 86 yards combined yards and 1TD

Bernard Berrian: My projection: Bernard Berrian is done. The hamstring injury resurfacing is a bad sign for the rest of the season.
Outcome: 47 yards and 1TD

Sidney Rice: Projection : 120 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 40 yards

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 25 yards and 1TD
Outcome: 12 yards and 1TD

Chester Taylor: My projection: 20 combined yards.
Outcome: 27 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Would NOT be a Top 10 fantasy defense.
Outcome: #16 Fantasy Defense for Week 8

THIS WEEK
The Vikings may be the best team in the league, and the Lions may

be the worst. Vikings players should have a field day from a

fantasy perspective. The only potential downside is this game

could turn ugly fast. It that’s the case, the Vikings may be

playing backups in the 4th quarter and protecting a lead. That

being said, I’m not worried. I’m bullish about Vikings’ players

going wild against Detroit. I predict the Vikings win 41-20.

RUMORS
There is a rumor that some players think Tarvaris Jackson should

be the quarterback and that he gives the Vikings the best chance

to win this season, not Brett Favre. Adam Schefter is reporting

that there is a schism in the locker room. Oh sorry, that was the

preseason. Oh my, how things have changed! No rumors, schisms or

controversies to report this week. When you’re 8-1, everybody is

happy.

INJURIES
Favre is probable with a groin injury. He hurt it prior to the

Green Bay game. It seemed to actually improve his play. He should

try and reinjure his groin in practice this week. The results

were phenomenal against the Packers! Bernard Berrian is probable

with a hamstring injury. The same injury he had prior to Green

Bay game where he scored a touchdown. He should try and maintain

that injury. Is there a trend here or am I reaching? I’ll update

Vikings injury status before kickoff via Twitter.

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK
Brett Favre is playing as good as ever. If this was college

football and Favre was in the running for the Heisman, then this

would one of those weeks where he throws for eight touchdowns.

However, it’s the NFL and Coach Childress won’t take any

unnecessary risks. The Vikings should get an early lead and then

pound the Detroit defense with the running game.

My Projection: 230 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS
It’s the Detroit Lions in Minnesota! If you own Adrian Peterson

you should have a big grin on your face all week. Look for

Chester Taylor to get a lot of work in the 4th quarter, as the

Vikings run out the clock with a big lead.

My Projection: Peterson 140 combined yard, 2 TDs; Taylor 60

combined yards

WIDE RECEIVERS
Every time I write off Bernard Berrian he responds with a

good game. However, he is no longer the number one receiver. That

title belongs to Sidney Rice. And although Berrian will

probably start, Percy Harvin is the second most productive

receiver on this team. The only problem with Vikings receivers

is that there are not enough balls to go around. Not only does

Favre have three solid options at wide receiver, but he also has

a great tight end and two running backs that can catch out of the

back field. This means that any of these guys can be hit or miss

in any given week. That being said, here is what I predict:

My Projection: Rice 90 yards, 1 TD, Harvin 60 combined yards

and 1TD, Berrian 50 yards

TIGHT ENDS
Visanthe Shiancoe is a great guy to have for scoring-only

leagues, but he doesn’t do much in terms of yards. Last week he

only had 12 yards on one catch. But he still managed to walk away

with a touchdown. He has 6 TDs in 8 games! So why not project

another one. My Projection: 20yards and 1TD

KICKER
If you have Ryan Longwell, you should start him every week. The

Vikings score a lot, and he’s very good. He’s also a kicker so

there’s not much else to say here.

DEFENSE
If the Lions were a movie, they would be “The Men Who Stare at

Goats”. Horrendous, or so I’ve heard. The Vikings Defense has

underperformed this year; however this is a dream matchup. They

will rank as one of the Top 5 for fantasy defenses for Week 10.

I always feel refreshed after a bye week and so should the

Vikings. Players have had time to heal and coaches have had an

extra week to study game film and prepare for one of the worst

teams in the league. This game is not a must-see like two weeks

ago in Green Bay. That is unless you play fantasy football and

you have Vikings’ players on your team. If that’s the case, you

don’t want to miss this. This may be the best game of the

week…for your fantasy team.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.thenflguy.com/2009/11/week-10-vikings-at-lions.html' title='WEEK 10 VIKINGS Vs. It’s always great to hear from my readers. Feel free to email me questions or send them via Twitter.

10/31/09 Rick F. - I'm in a scoring only league, no yardage or ppr. Which 3 wr/te would you start for week 8? Donald Driver, Devin Hester, Dallas Clark, Lee Evans, Vernon Davis, or Kevin Boss.
Thanks,
Rick

theNFLguy - It's easy to eliminate Boss and Evans.

I would say Davis, Driver, Hester in that order with Dallas Clark running very close in 4th place. I like the matchups for both Driver and Hester this week.

************************************************************************************

10/28/09 Joe T. - With Berrian hobbled, would this be a good week to play Percy Harvin?

theNFLguy - Depends how many WRs you start and who you have on your team. I do think Percy is a good play this week. He is either a low end #2 or high end #3, meaning I rank him somewhere between 20-30 for WRs.

Sidney Rice is the man now. I consider him a #1 WR this week (meaning top 12)

************************************************************************************

10/28/09 Joe T. - Is there any RB on a roster that no one knows about that could become a beast coming down the stretch? For example - Shonn Greene for the Jets; he was a forgotten man, and now folks are rushing to claim him of waiver wire?

How about WR; any super sleepers - Sam Aiken for New England??

theNFLguy - There are lots of RBs that can become beasts if the starting RB goes down. However, it's a guessing game of who may get injured and who will step up. You have to monitor injuries closely of the starting RBs, especially on teams that use a 2 back system. I expect Addai's stock to go up with Donald Brown injured. But as of now, I don't know how long Brown is out.

Jamaal Charles is a guy to take a look at. I don't think he'll be a beast, but he has potential to be productive. He'll get his chance with the probable suspension and demotion of Larry Johnson. Justin Fargas is another guy who is starting to look good, and he is not yet owned in a high percentage of leagues.

I don't have any super sleeper wide receivers this week. The 3rd WR for the Patriots always has potential, but Aiken does not have history of production. He looked good, but so far it's just one week. Another guy I like is Lance Moore in New Orleans. He was injured earlier in the year but appears healthy now. He was very productive last year, and Drew Brees in on a record pace. So I expect him to emerge in the 2nd half of the year.

VIKINGS AT PACKERS: FAVRE RETURNS TO GREEN BAY
LAST WEEK
Could this have been a Super Bowl preview? Maybe. It’s clear that this was a matchup of two of the best teams in the NFL. I rank the Vikings second and the Steelers third after seven weeks. The Steelers won 27-17, but the game was much closer than the score and it went down to the wire. Late in the 4th quarter, down 13-10, Brett Favre drove his team down the field and into scoring position. Favre then threw a perfect ten yard touchdown pass to Sidney Rice; however a questionable tripping penalty negated the play. A short time later, Favre had the ball knocked from his hand and returned 77 yards for a touchdown to give the Steelers a 20-10 lead. But like a great title fight, the Vikings pulled themselves off the mat and delivered a knockdown of their own. On the very next play, Percy Harvin returned the kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, making it a 20-17 game. The Vikings then stopped the Steelers offense and got the ball back for one last drive. Favre drove his team down the field to the 20 yard line and into scoring position. It appeared it would be another heroic comeback for Favre until Chester Taylor let one of Favre’s passes slip through his hands. The ball was then intercepted and returned 82 yards for a touchdown. Afterwards, FOX’s own Daryl “Moose” Johnston who was calling the game stated “That goes on Brett Favre’s record, but that’s Chester Taylor’s interception.” So with two defensive touchdowns in the final six and half minutes of the game, a goal line stand against the Vikings on first down from the one yard line, and a questionable call that reversed a Vikings touchdown, the Steelers escaped with a victory. I don’t think anyone would complain to see a rematch for the Lombardi trophy in February.

Now on to Projections versus Reality:

The Game: My projection: Vikings 24, Steelers 20
Outcome: Steelers 27, Vikings 17

Adrian Peterson: My projection: 90 yards rushing, 1TD.
Outcome: 69 yards rushing for 1TD and 60 yards receiving

Brett Favre: My projection: 210 yards passing, 2 TDs and 1 interception.
Outcome: 334 yards passing, 1 interception.

Percy Harvin: My projection: Don’t start Harvin because he was questionable with an injury at time I wrote the report
Outcome: 49 yards combined yards and 1TD on a kickoff return

Bernard Berrian: My projection: 90 yards
Outcome:18 yards then later got injured and left the game

Sidney Rice: Projection : 70 Yards and 1 TD
Outcome: 136 yards. His TD was negated by questionable officiating

Visanthe Shiancoe: My projection: 30 yards and 1TD
Outcome: 27 yards

Chester Taylor: My projection: 30 combined yards.
Outcome: 21 combined yards

Vikings Defense: My projection: Would NOT be a Top 10 fantasy defense.
Outcome: #13 Fantasy Defense for Week 7

THIS WEEK
This is the biggest game of Week 8. In fact, this is the biggest game in the NFL for the entire regular season. Mr. Green Bay Packer is now playing for the arch enemy and returning to Lambeau field. In all likelihood, one of the most loved and popular players in Green Bay Packers history will be booed like Donovan McNabb on draft day. It will be a Super Bowl atmosphere that will have everyone’s adrenaline pumping. It will be insane to say the least. Not only will it be extremely emotional, but it will also impact the rest of the season. If the Vikings win they can all but seal up the division. But if the Packers win then the division is up for grabs. I think this will be a shootout. I predict the Vikings win 34-31.

RUMORS
No rumors to report this week, so instead I’ll discuss my power rankings and provide some predictions. In the beginning of the article I told you that I thought the Vikings and Steelers were the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the league. Here are my top four teams after seven weeks.

1. Saints

2. Vikings

3. Steelers

4. Colts

Prediction: I think the Saints will beat the Vikings in the NFC Championship and the Steelers will beat the Colts in the AFC Championship. The Colts always look great in the regular season but tend to fold in the playoffs. The Steelers have a championship defense; just the kind to throw Peyton Manning off his game when it counts.

INJURIES
Berrian reinjured his hamstring. On Wednesday he was listed as questionable. I’ll give an update on his status before kickoff via Twitter.

POSITION ANALYSIS
QUARTERBACK
Brett Favre played phenomenal against a Steelers defense that may be the best in the league. He threw for over 300 yards. He had one touchdown called back by a questionable call, and he led some great drives that ended badly in the red zone. His lone interception was the fault of Chester Taylor.

I have to slap a Warning Label on Favre this week. It states the following – Warning: The starting of this quarterback could be hazardous to the health of your fantasy team. This will be one of the most emotional games of his career, and who knows which Favre will show up. Could it be the Favre that sometimes plays at an otherworldly level? Or will his alter ego throw a plethora of interceptions?

My Projection: 300 yards, 3 TDs

RUNNING BACKS
Teams are really keying in on AD. He only had 18 carries against the Steelers, whereas Favre threw the ball 51 times. Analysts have criticized this distribution, but sometimes you have to adjust to the defense. Most defensive coordinators are daring Favre to beat them, rather than take their chances with Peterson. I expect this to continue, but for Peterson to get more carries than last week.

My Projection: 100 yards rushing, 40 yards receiving and 1TD for Peterson. 20 combined yards for Chester Taylor.

WIDE RECEIVERS
Bernard Berrian is done in my book. He is not the same player as he was last year, and most of this can be attributed to his hamstring injury. The fact that this problem resurfaced last week is not a good sign for Berrian or the rest of his season. Sidney Rice is a number one receiver. And not just on the Vikings, but also for your fantasy leagues. I project Sidney Rice to be a top 12 receiver for the remainder of the season. Everyone is talking about the chemistry that he has developed with Favre, and it was evident against the Steelers. He caught 11 balls for 136 yards. He was targeted 14 times and at least twice in the end zone. We all should have seen this coming. There is something to be said about a receiver with the last name of Rice. Percy Harvin is what they call a playmaker. He can do it on special teams, in the wildcat or as a traditional receiver. I’m not expecting Berrian to play and that’s good news for Harvin owners.

My Projection: Rice 120 yards, 1 TD, Harvin 75 combined yards and 1TD.

TIGHT ENDS
If you have to start a tight end, Visanthe Shiancoe is a good one. He won’t get many yards, but there is a good chance he’ll catch a touchdown. My Projection: 25 yards and 1TD

KICKER
Why aren’t people focused on Longwell also returning to face his old team? Oh, that’s right. He’s a kicker and nobody cares. Unless he’s on your fantasy team, then you care. He’s a good one. Start him.

DEFENSE
The Vikings sacked Rogers nine times in Minneapolis. I think they’ll harass him again this game as well, but expect the Packers to put up a lot of points. My projection: I expect the Vikings to finish outside the Top 10 for the 2nd week in a row.

This matchup has everything you want in a game. Two of the top quarterbacks in the league, and they probably don’t like each other. Favre wasn’t happy when the Packers drafted Rogers, and there was never any talk about Favre trying to mentor him in Green Bay. The Vikings and Packers have two explosive offenses, and one of the most heated division rivalries in the NFL. There is the schism between Favre and Ted Thompson, the general manager. And the unthinkable has happened. There is a schism between Farve and the Green Bay fans. In my opinion, this game is a bigger story than the World Series. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

theNFLguy Versus the ESPN Experts
How does theNFLguy stack up picking games vs. the ESPN experts?
